What your generator set really costs
A generator set is not paid for at purchase, it is paid for every day. Here is what a diesel generator set burns to produce the same energy as an NV station, and what the same energy costs from the grid. The diesel and electricity prices can be changed: enter your own and the table updates.
The real cost of a generator set
What does your generator set really cost?
A generator set is not paid for when you buy it, it is paid for every day. Here is what a diesel generator set burns to produce the same energy as an NV station, compared with the cost of recharging the station from the grid, over 250 working days. The prices can be changed: enter your own and the table updates.
| Station | Energy per charge | Diesel over 250 days | Diesel cost | Recharging cost | Saving over 250 days | Generator set CO₂ over 250 days |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| NV-C24 | 1.90 kWh | 157 L | £310 | £125 | £185 | 415 kg |
| NV-P36 | 2.61 kWh | 215 L | £427 | £172 | £255 | 571 kg |
| NV-W36 | 2.61 kWh | 215 L | £427 | £172 | £255 | 571 kg |
| NV-W50 | 4.28 kWh | 353 L | £700 | £282 | £418 | 937 kg |
Starting prices: diesel, UK average for the week of 28 September 2026 (GOV.UK); electricity, Ofgem price cap unit rate from 1 October 2026, Direct Debit. One full charge per day, calculated on 85% of rated capacity, diesel generator set at 0.33 litre per kWh.
This calculation assumes a generator set that only runs for the time needed to produce this energy. On a real site it runs all day, including when nothing is being used, and it is at low load that it is least efficient. The real gap is therefore larger than this table shows.
